How to support a friend?

Friendships are very important for us. In these relationships, there may be moments when a friend is going through a tough time. How can you support a friend during difficult times and be there for them?

  • Listen to your friend attentively when they want to talk about their worries or joys. Listen not only to their words but try to perceive the feelings behind their thoughts. Being a interested listener can be one of the greatest gifts you can give to someone.
  • Try to understand how your friend is feeling. Imagine how you would feel in their situation. Empathy helps you see things from their perspective. It's very important for a friend to feel that you're trying to understand them.
  • Ask your friend how you can help them. Sometimes a simple conversation may be enough, but perhaps they also need your practical assistance. A small gesture can mean a lot to a friend in a difficult moment.
  • Friendships are built on trust. Be a reliable supporter to your friend and don't disclose their personal matters to others.
  • Offer support to your friend during tough times. We're all human and we make mistakes. Don't judge your friend if something goes wrong. If you see your friend doing something that may harm them, be honest. But also be gentle and kind in your words. Honesty should go hand in hand with support and understanding.
  • Do something fun together. Supporting friends doesn't always mean discussing serious topics. Laughter and joy help alleviate stress. Plan something enjoyable, like going to the movies together, having an outing, or anything else that brings you both joy.
  • Take care of yourself too. Pay attention to your own well-being – how you're feeling emotionally and physically. You are the most important, and you can't offer support to others if you're exhausted.

Every friendship is different! It's important to be sincere and caring, and to show your friends that you're there for them in both good and bad times.
